Deep Plane Rejuvenation

Achieve a naturally refreshed, vibrant and youthful appearance

As you age, you may notice that your face and neck start to lose tone and sag, your eyes may appear tired and your jawline looks less defined.  As we age, facial muscles weaken and skin loses, and lifestyle, sun exposure and genetics all influence how quickly these changes will occur such as lifestyle, sun exposure, and genetics all influence how quickly these changes occur. A facelift remains the most effective methods of addressing these inevitable signs of aging.

Dr Ranieri is highly experienced in facelifts, specialising also in the deep plane rejuvenation technique, one of the most effective and popular types of facial rejuvenation amongst both plastic surgeons and patients, due to the more natural results. Using this method, which involves releasing and repositioning muscle and fat, without the stretched skin and tension associated with different facelifts techniques, creates a more natural softer outcome.

Traditional facelift vs deep plane rejuvenation

Unlike traditional facelifts that primarily tighten the skin and the superficial muscular layer (SMAS), a deep plane facelift operates at a deeper anatomical level to achieve a more comprehensive and natural rejuvenation. This advanced surgical technique involves releasing the retaining ligaments that anchor the facial skin and the SMAS layer to the underlying muscles, allowing the midface and cheeks to be lifted and repositioned as a single unit rather than through superficial skin traction.

By working beneath the SMAS and platysma layers, the deep plane approach restores the natural support structures of the face, enhancing definition and volume in the midface. Sometimes there is also necessary to add fat grafting. Because the tissues are elevated as a whole and not stretched, there is significantly less tension on the skin, resulting in minimal scarring and faster healing.

The outcome is a smoother, firmer, and more youthful appearance that maintains facial harmony and expression. This method offers long-lasting results while preserving a natural, rested, and elegant look—without the artificial tightness often associated with older facelift techniques.

Process

How it works

Free consultation

During your initial consultation, Dr Ranieri will evaluate your suitability for the procedure, assess your skin quality, discuss your expectations and potencial risks.

Surgery

This type of facial rejuvenation surgery takes between 3 and 4 hours. The process is carried out under general anaesthesia or sedation with local anaesthesia.

Post-operative care plan

You should expect to stay overnight. Dr Ranieri will provide a detailed post-operative specifying the steps to follow to ensure a speedy recovery. You will have a dressing for around 24 hours and then it will be changed for a chin band. You will need to sleep with your head elevated for 2 weeks. Stitches will be removed between 7 and 10 days, and normal activity can be resumed after around 2 to 3 weeks.

Recovery

After a deep plane rejuvenation surgery, heavy bruising and swelling should be expected, not only around your face but possibly your neck and chest too. A cold compress will help the swelling subside.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

This type of surgery is ideal for anyone who wants to turn back time to achieve a natural rejuvenated visage. A deep plane rejuvenation will improve your overall appearance by addressing sagging jowls, sunken cheeks, wrinkles and skin elasticity. However, when undergoing any type of cosmetic surgery, you be in general good health (both mentally and physically) prior to the procedure.

After a deep plane facelift, your face is beautifully refreshed with a defined jawline, a lifted and tightened neck, and smoother, firmer skin. Wrinkles soften, facial contours are refined, and your overall appearance exudes a naturally youthful, rejuvenated glow.

A deep plane facelift can last for around 10 to 15 years, but this doesn’t mean your face will return to its pre-surgery appearance. After 10 years or so, you may begin to notice subtle changes, such as slight sagging along the jawline, midface or neck. In which case, it is possible to undergo additional cosmetic treatments or touch-ups to preserve your look. It is important to remember that while a deep plane facelift provides long-lasting improvement, your skin and underlying tissues continue to age over time.

There are many steps to ensuring you are ready for your facial rejuvenation surgery, which include to follow a healthy diet and exercise, protect your skin from the sunshine, stop smoking, stop drinking alcohol and drink plenty of water. On the practical side, you will need to rest and recover, so it is a good idea to prepare your meals and do any shopping you may need before the surgery, and also arrange for someone to help you when you get home.
