Sculpt a sleek beautiful silhouette
If we experience life, our body can change, both pregnancy or dramatic weight loss, can drastically affect the abdomen, resulting in excess skin and fat. A tummy tuck (also known as abdominoplasty)is a cosmetic surgery procedure that removes the fat and loose (or excess) skin from the abdomen and tightens the underlying muscles to create a smoother, firmer and more defined waistline.
Although a tummy tuck focuses on reshaping the midsection, many patients choose to combine a tummy tuck with other body contouring treatments such as liposuction, for more balanced, sculpted results. By addressing several areas at once, this combined approach can enhance overall body proportions while minimising the need for multiple surgeries and recovery periods.
A tummy tuck can be performed as either a full or mini procedure, depending on your needs.
Full tummy tuck
Dr Ranieri makes an incision from hip to hip, tightens the abdominal muscles, removes excess skin and fat, and repositions the belly button for a smoother, flatter appearance.
Mini tummy tuck
This procedure is ideal for individuals with smaller deposits of fat and loose skin confined to the lower abdomen below the navel. This less extensive option typically does not require repositioning the belly button.
Before undergoing any type of plastic surgery procedure, Dr Ranieri will invite you to a consultation to establish your suitability, based on your medical history, health reasons for undergoing the procedure and expectations. During this time the possible outcomes and risks will also be explained.
Depending upon the type of tummy tuck, mini or full, the procedure can take between 2 and 5 hours and will be carried out under general anaesthesia and you will spend at least one night in the hospital.
After the tummy tuck surgery you will be given a detailed post-operative care plan outlining how to take care of your wound and the suggested follow up appointments with Dr Ranieri to assess your healing progress.
You will need to allow at least 1 month of rest before returning to work, however every patient is different and heels at a different rate, depending upon their quality of skin and general level of health and fitness. Tummy Tuck
While both liposuction and tummy tucks are cosmetic procedures, they serve different purposes. Liposuction is designed to remove stubborn fat cells from specific areas to sculpt and contour the body, whereas a tummy tuck removes excess skin and tightens weakened abdominal muscles (often after pregnancy or significant weight loss). In some cases, a tummy tuck may include liposuction, as part of the overall reshaping process.
Yes, more and more patients undergoing cosmetic surgery are choosing to combine a tummy tuck with other cosmetic procedures, which is often referred to as a mommy makeover, to achieve their desired body shape. Having multiple procedures performed during a single surgical session offers a more efficient experience, by combining treatments into one recovery period rather than several, patients experience less stress, greater comfort, a smoother healing process and an overall shorter recovery time.
Yes, it’s possible to become pregnant after a tummy tuck, however, pregnancy naturally stretches the abdominal skin and muscles, which can affect the results of your surgery. Because these changes may alter your body’s contour, Dr Ranieri recommends waiting until you’ve completed your family before having a tummy tuck to help preserve your results for the long term.
Yes. You should stop smoking at least 6 to 8 weeks before your scheduled tummy tuck surgery and continue to avoid smoking for at least the same amount of time afterward. This includes all types of nicotine, such as patches, gum and vaping, as nicotine can slow down the healing process.
